The AIAS is an independent, non-profit and student-run organization that is more than just a club. This grassroots association is a cooperative between thousands of students (of all ages and academic degrees) committed to helping each other. It provides a sense of community and a forum to share differing views. The AIAS is also a professional organization that is the official voice of architecture students.

2008-2009 Membership Nameplate Competition
Every year, AIAS-SPSU provides Membership Nameplates for each of its members. This year, with the recent introduction of the laser cutter, AIAS thought to put this machine to use. In years past, it has always been that the Board designed a nameplate, printed and applied it to foam core, and issued it to its members. We all know that after a little bit of time, glue doesn't hold like it once did and once foam core bends, its all down hill from there. This year, we're not only giving you options on the design, but we're also giving you the option of material.
Our Proposal to You (the Members):
Develop a design you would like to see for your nameplate. It is not a garauntee it will be used but there is a good chance it will be one of the four chosen and offered as a template. Once the four have been chosen, they will then be offered to the members to select for their 2009 Membership Nameplate. We will offer it in wood as a standard and for a small fee (dependent on interest levels), will also be offered in acrylic. Other materials may be offered dependent on approval for use in the laser cutter such as glass and metals.Things to consider:
Nameplates must have not exceed 5"x11".
Must include the text "AIAS", "2009". "Southern Polytechnic State University(or SPSU)" on it. The AIAS Logo may be used in place of the text "AIAS" but is not required.
Just because the bounds are 5"x11" doesn't mean that it must be a rectangle shaped edge to it.
Remember that the laser cutter is capable of etching as well as cutting through materials. All submissions need to be submitted to AIAS-SPSU and must include your name in the email.
Deadline: Halloween 2008 (Friday October 31st,2008)
2008-2009 AIAS-SPSU T-Shirt Design Competition
Remember that shirt with Corbu and Gehry among others as South Park characters? Or how about the "We do it with models all night long..." classic? Have fun and design a shirt for the 2008-2009 AIAS Members. It can be fun, whitty, or whatever you feel would represent us well. The only limits are the common sense ones but must be stated anyways: No vulgarity or anything profane. Remember we ARE putting our logo on this.
This year we are offering a FREE Membership to the T-Shirt Design winner! T-Shirt designs should be emailed to Coby Andrews as soon as possible.
2008 CANstruction
CANstruction is a national food drive held locally by AIA-Atlanta. The event consists of teams doing food drives to collect non-perishable goods and then designing a structure/scene out of the collected goods. Awards are then issued after being reviewed by a panel of judges for things such as "Best meal", "Most cans collected", and "Most inpressive structurally".
In years past, AIAS-SPSU has presented:
- The Big Chic-CAN
- N-building Architects
- The AmeriCAN way
This years event will be held on November 6th at Underground Atlanta. This is the fourth year AIAS-Southern Polytechnic State University has been invited to participate in this great program.
Team members for this include:
Jake Begnaud
Kyri Prowett
Trey Pinesmith
John Greenage
Amir Mousavi
Agnes Dang
Patrick McCarty
Tavarick Wynn
If you would like to join the team, please email Jake Begnaud.
Tutorial Classes!
This year, AIAS-SPSU is bringing back the tutorial classes big time and introducing many new ones to the program. Once the design charette has completed, check this page to see which of the four styles will be available as well as details about which materials will be available for them.

Updates
Going into our second year of participation, SPSU's Freedom by Design team plans to make even more a difference than the one made for Marcella last year. This year's recipient is in the process of being chosen and we will soon after be holding a design charette for ideas similar to last years.
Stay posted for updates and changes as things are in swift progress!

*On a side note, everyone here at SPSU is very proud to have had current AIAS President J.W. Blanchard as our dear friend and 2006-2007 AIAS-SPSU President. We wish him continued success in all he pursues and hope he continues to visit us when he can manage.
AIAS-SPSU Forum
With the introduction of the new website, we've also introduced a new feature into the mix and that is this forum. The purpose of the forum is to open up communication between fellow students and maybe even across schools. The AIAS-SPSU Forum is open to all architecture students regardless of year, school, and AIAS Membership is NOT required. This is a service we would like to offer to the school and anyone in the architecture school community.
When you register for the forum, it is required that your username be your school email without the "@schoolname.edu". ANY users signed up with names outside of this range will be removed immediately.
Each section has an explanation of what each thread entails. All topics should pertain to the threads they are listed under.
Well we hope this helps and hope to see this feature commonly used! Enjoy!

Our Mission:
Large numbers of people in our city are literally prisioners in their own homes. They are unable to get into their showers, ascend steps, or even open doors. More importantly, many are unable to flee their homes in an emergency without assistance, due to the built environment of their homes.
It is people such as this Freedom by Design is dedicated to helping. Freedom by Design is a volunteer organization that surveys homes, identifies barriers that seriously affect the safety of a person in their home and their quality of life. Solutions to eliminate these barriers are found and then implemented. The mission of Freedom by Design is to radically impact peoples lives by giving them access to their homes through simple design and construction solutions.
How We Do This:
Freedom by Design helps people who are unable to qualify for other assistance. Volunteers survey homes to identify built obstacles that prevent access to areas within a person's home. Once these obstacles have been identified, they are prioritized and solutions are found to eliminate these barriers. Priority is given to barriers that create life-safety issues. Second priority is given to quality of life issues. This program is intended to provide solutions to basic daily needs, not to provide "luxury" items. Due to a limited amount of resources, there are instances where not all of the identified barriers can be eliminated. In those cases, the project team will determine with the recipients which solutions can be accomplished with the resources available.
Many of the barriers being discussed can be eliminated through simple, low cost alterations. Rooms can be made accessible by installing new levered hardware. Kitchens can be made usable by removing the base of existing cabinets and lowering wall cabinets. Mobility can be achieved by changing flooring materials. Access into and out of the home can be accomplished by building a simple ramp. These are simple modifications that can enable a person to live independently without constant assistance, and greatly improve an individual's confidence and self-esteem.
This is a grass roots effort to improve the lives of people in our community. We encourage you to contribute and truly make a difference in a person's life.
Pictures will be up and available as we begin our process for the 2008-2009 Freedom by Design Recipient.

The mission of the AIAS is:
To promote excellence in architecture education, training and practice. We celebrate our membership in several ways. Members of the AIAS have the opportunity to have their work published in Crit, Journal of the AIAS the only international journal devoted to the work and critical thoughts of architecture students.
To foster an appreciation of architecture and related disciplines. We host an annual convention, FORUM, which provides students with the opportunity to learn about the issues facing architectural education and the profession, to meet students and professionals with common interests, and to interact with some of today’s leading architects and designers.
To enrich communities in a spirit of collaboration. Through the Freedom by Design™ program, we are organizing our members to be good citizens in their communities.
To organize students and combine their efforts to advance the art and science of architecture. We serve as the sole student voice in the decision making process of such organizations as The American Institute of Architects (AIA), Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA), and National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB).
